Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects have won a competition to design the 11,500 sqm Kimmel Quarter site in Riga's central district. The building, which takes up almost an entire city block, used to be home to the now-abandoned Kimmel Brewery. Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects were one of 11 companies that entered the competition. Their design will include office space, a hotel as well as a gym, spa, food court, kindergarten and a convenience store. The aim with the 30,000 sqm office building was to incorporate and recycle as much of the old building as possible. The building employs an energy efficient design in line with the European Unions 2020 climate and energy goals.
