ANO lost the battle for Brno even though it won the election by collecting 23 percent of all votes, beating the second place ODS by 5 percentage points. In the negotiations that followed, it even forged an agreement between ODS, KDU and CSSD representatives for a broad coalition that would lead the city, with ANO's Petr Vokřál set to continue for another term as mayor. But at some point, behind the scenes discussions led to a complete turnaround in which ODS, KDU and CSSD agreed to dump ANO from the coalition and invite the Pirate party to join. ODS's Marketa Vaňkovká will assume the role of mayor of Brno. Outgoing mayor Vokřál, who was supposed to be visiting Expo Real in Munich, was seething with anger, telling journalists that he'd already shaken hands with the leaders of the other parties and agreed on the wording of a coalition contract. ANO's leader and prime minister Andrej Babiš called the move a massive fraud. It's unclear what the impact for Brno of angering the prime minister will be. The Czech government coalition in Prague is led by ANO with CSSD in coalition.
