Budapest's Chain Bridge to close for 18-24 months

The city of Budapest has announced a tender to procure a contract for the renovation of the iconic Chain Bridge. Beginning in 2019, the bridge will be closed to all car traffic for 18 months, according to the city's transport authority (the BKK) while pedestrians won't be allowed on it for two years. The work will include the replacement of the road surface, repairs to the bridge's steel structures, the application of corrosion protection measures and the widening of the pedestrian passages. Restoration work will also be carried out on the stone lions along the bridge, and other stone markers and inscriptions. New LED lighting will be installed, replacing the less efficient lighting system. An agreement appears to be in place under which the government will contribute funds to the project, so long as the work is completed in under two years.
