The idea of charging a fee to drive on Prague's main roads has been the focus of debates for years now, but the city's leadership made clear Wednesday that it's not feasible to implement it in the next four years. At the very least, said mayor Zdeněk Hřib, it won't be before new local elections are held. Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr says that at a minimum, the city's ring road between the D1 and the D11 motorway would have to be completed first. Construction on this portion of the half-finished ring road won't begin until 2021, if all goes well, while the completion of planning for the others is even more difficult to predict. "Drivers have to have the possibility to drive around Prague," he said. "It's also important to carry out the needed legislated changes so that we would be able to actually reinvest revenues from a toll system into cleaning up transportation in Prague." At the moment, writes Novinky.cz, the state would end up collecting all the revenues.
