Czech construction output increased year-on-year in January 2025
In January 2025, construction output in the Czech Republic rose by 8.2% compared to the previous year. However, in month-on-month terms, output declined by 1.2%. The value of building permits granted fell by 28.7%, while the number of new dwellings started dropped by 27.0% year-on-year. The number of completed dwellings also saw a significant decrease, falling by 41.1% compared to January 2024.
Despite the month-on-month decline, construction activity continued to expand on a year-on-year basis. According to Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department at the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), both building construction and civil engineering construction contributed to the growth. Building construction output increased by 8.7%, while civil engineering construction rose by 6.9% compared to the same period last year.
The total value of construction projects for which building permits were granted in January amounted to CZK 28.7 billion, representing a 28.7% decrease from the previous year. The decline was attributed to a lower number of permits issued during the month.
The number of newly started dwellings in January reached 2,553, marking a 27.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Completed dwellings totaled 1,260, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 41.1%.
Across the European Union, construction output also showed a downward trend. According to Eurostat, construction activity in the EU27 declined by 0.8% year-on-year in December 2024. Eurostat is expected to release data for January 2025 on March 20.
