The Czech Republic has applied to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) to order Poland to pay a fine of EUR 5 million a day for not stopping lignite mining at the Turów mine, the Court said.

"The Czech Republic has asked the Court to order #Polska to pay a fine of EUR 5 million a day for failure to comply with the obligation to immediately stop extracting # brown coal in the # Turów mine near the Czech border," reads the CJEU profile on Twitter.

Almost a month ago, the CJEU obliged Poland to immediately cease lignite mining in the Turów mine until the resolution of the complaint submitted by the Czech Republic in this matter concerning environmental conditions.

After the CJEU issued the decision, the Polish side started negotiations with the Czech Republic, initiated by local government officials. A framework agreement was also agreed, which obliges Poland to invest, limiting the negative effects of mining on the environment, and the Czech Republic - to withdraw the mine's case from the CJEU.

Poland agreed to appoint an expert commission to investigate environmental issues, and PGE is to complete investments in a screen that will eliminate water runoff. In addition, the PGE Group is to work on the embankments to protect against pollen that penetrates the Czech side.

Planned investments worth EUR 40-45 million are to be co-financed from the state budget, as well as local governments and PGE.

A bilateral agreement in this matter is being prepared by the Czech side and is to be concluded under Art. 273 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU).
