The Greek government is considering reopening retail stores on March 8th. The government and the market are considering the possibility of reopening the market in the normal regime with social distancing and hygiene provisions, in order to avoid the retail business operating at different speeds and to prevent its shutdown after a few weeks. What the market is most afraid of now is a new blockade before Easter (the Greek-Orthodox celebration this year is on May 2), which would take away another busy period for that sector.

The fact the retail commerce is closed in Attica and several other key areas, all of which account for 60 percent of the market turnover in Greece, means huge losses not only for the merchants but also the state coffers, that are taking a weekly hit of EUR 500 million.
