ODS aims to retain Senate leadership with Vystrčil’s reappointment in upcoming elections
The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) aims to retain its influence in the Czech Senate in the upcoming September elections, with the intention of reappointing Miloš Vystrčil as Senate President. This was announced by ODS leader and Prime Minister Petr Fiala during the launch of the final phase of the party’s Senate campaign. The ODS, as part of the Together coalition, which includes TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL, is fielding 16 candidates to contest 27 seats up for election—six directly from ODS, five from the Together coalition, and another five in various other coalitions.
Prime Minister Fiala emphasized that the ODS is offering a broad spectrum of candidates, ranging from seasoned senators seeking re-election to new faces who could inject fresh energy into the Senate. He highlighted that the senators elected in September would serve until 2030 and play a crucial role in safeguarding democracy and freedom in the Czech Republic. Vystrčil noted that the ODS candidates include experienced individuals from regional governance and healthcare, with several former mayors among them.
This year, the ODS and TOP 09 Senate caucus is defending 14 seats, 10 of which are held by ODS members. Fiala dismissed the notion that populists have no influence in Senate elections, warning that the threat posed by radical forces is not insignificant and that populists are seeking to gain power wherever possible.
