Pardubice will repair and transform a part of the Republic Square, which is in the centre near the historical zone, within a few years. The transformation will include greenery and parking near the Green Gate, the church, the underpass and the bank. City Hall wants to involve the public to contribute suggestions, the municipality announced.

"As this is an area that has great potential and falls within the city's conservation area, historical and cultural values will also have to be taken into account. Our goal is to visually unify the area, which will also include compositional and material integration of the area," said Mayor Jan Nadrchal (ANO).

The site has inadequate furnishings, an unused lawn by the memorial to the victims of the war and there are now parking spaces at the foot of the church. The study proposes to remove these parts, plant new greenery and acquire new and more purposeful furniture to create a rest area. The area is to be used mainly for pedestrians, cyclists and the public.

"Unfortunately, today motor traffic dominates there. We believe that by carefully cleaning up and cultivating this heritage site, we can create a clear, safe and more accessible public space complemented by high-quality, meaningful greenery," said architect Matěj Šebek.

The town hall and the team of architects will also ask residents for their opinion at a public meeting on 14 February. It will start at 5 p.m. at the Square of the Republic. Participants will then move to the City Hall ballroom.

"We want to know what the citizens perceive as positive or negative in this area and what is their idea of the future shape of the area. The participants will plot all their findings directly on the map. The conclusions of the meeting will then be assessed in terms of relevance," said Nadrchal.

The final design should be ready by the middle of this year. The city will seek European subsidies from the ITI Hradec Králové-Pardubice agglomeration, or some state subsidies, the mayor added.
