Prague city museum plans CZK 751.3 million renovation of historic Desfour Palace
The Prague City Museum is planning a major renovation of the historic Desfour Palace, located in Florence, with an estimated cost of CZK 751.3 million. The project, approved by the Prague City Council, is aimed at restoring the dilapidated palace, which has been declared a protected monument. However, the exact start date for the renovation remains uncertain, as it is likely to commence during the next parliamentary term, according to Deputy Mayor for Culture Jiří Pospíšil.
The renovation plans are based on a study being prepared by architect Jakub Cígler. According to city officials, the palace is in a severe state of disrepair, with structural concerns that have led to the prohibition of entry. Pospíšil emphasized that the building’s restoration is an urgent priority for the museum. “The decision marks the first step, but the reconstruction will take time. The study should be ready next year, with the project likely to begin in the next term,” he said.
Once renovated, the palace will not only serve as the new administrative hub for the museum, relocating staff from the current offices on Kožná Street, but will also become an interactive cultural space. It is expected to host various exhibitions and programs highlighting the history, present, and future of Prague. The palace’s attic will be transformed into a public space offering views of the city, along with a restaurant and short-term rental areas.
Built between 1845 and 1847 in the late classical style by architect Josef Kranner for Count Desfours-Walderode, the Desfour Palace retains several original features, including a marble staircase, mosaic parquet floors, chandeliers, stained glass windows, and a tiled stove.
