The cinema market in Romania has started to recover the decreases it recorded during the pandemic, but it is still far from the figures recorded in the period 2016-2019, according to a study carried out by Cushman & Wakefiled.

Cinema operators now have to deal with rising costs, but also the development of streaming platforms. More than 13 million viewers went to the cinema in 2019, a number that drastically reduced to 3.3 million in 2020, and which climbed shyly to 4.6 million viewers in 2021. The incomes also decreased: from RON 265 million in 2019, to no more than RON 68 million in 2020, according to data from the National Cinematography Center. Last year, the cinemas had income of over RON 100 million, and this year the optimism is kept by new productions that will reach the big screens.
