Tchibo unveils cutting-edge technology at modern distribution centre in Cheb
Tchibo has set a new benchmark in logistics with the introduction of advanced technologies at its distribution centre in Panattoni Park Cheb. This state-of-the-art facility has become one of the most modern distribution centres in Europe, featuring innovative systems designed to enhance operational efficiency.
Spanning over 110,000 square metres, the distribution centre stands as the third largest logistics building ever constructed in the Czech Republic. Developed in three phases from 2016 to 2021, it now serves as a pivotal hub for Tchibo’s e-commerce operations. The centre’s recent upgrade includes a sophisticated warehouse management system provided by Körber, with FORTNA consulting on the project’s modernisation. DHL operates the warehouse, while the building is owned by Accolade Industrial Fund and Panattoni managed its construction.
The newly installed technology aims to optimize warehouse space and accelerate logistics processes. Central to the upgrade is an advanced automation and conveyor system, including a pocket sorter with approximately 110 packing points, designed to expedite the reoffering of defect-free returned goods. The system also features a basic control mechanism that enhances the efficiency of the goods cycle.
Dr. Jens Köppen, CFO of Tchibo Group, praised the centre’s innovative features, stating, “The Cheb facility, with its cutting-edge conveyor technology, is now one of Europe’s most advanced logistics centres. We are proud of this achievement, which allows us to effectively navigate the challenges of rapidly evolving markets.”
Milan Kratina, Chairman of the Board of Accolade Industrial Fund, emphasized the significance of the partnership, saying, “Tchibo’s commitment to modern technology and innovation aligns perfectly with our goals. As one of the largest tenants in our portfolio, Tchibo reinforces our dedication to advancing modern business infrastructure across Europe.”
Pavel Sovička, Panattoni’s General Manager for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, highlighted the project’s impact, “This development showcases the high value of advanced logistics facilities and their role in the economic transformation of former coal regions.”
Bjørn A. Brunkow, Vice President and Head of Consulting at FORTNA, reflected on the collaborative effort, “We are proud to have contributed to the design and implementation of this high-performance logistics solution. Tchibo’s trust in us underscores our role in setting new standards for e-commerce logistics.”
Michael Brand, Executive Vice President EMEA at Körber Supply Chain Software, noted the project’s complexity and success, “The collaboration among all partners has resulted in a powerful warehouse campus, exemplifying a sophisticated supply chain in action.”
Filip Budík, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Czech Republic, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing partnership, “Working with Tchibo aligns perfectly with our shared commitment to innovation and efficiency in logistics.”
Jan Vrba, Mayor of Cheb, welcomed the investment, “Tchibo’s continued success and significant investment in Cheb highlight the city’s attractiveness for business. This project is a testament to the benefits of doing business in our region.”
Panattoni Park Cheb, owned by Accolade Industrial Fund, is strategically located near the D6 motorway, just 8 kilometres from the German border. The park won the CIJ Awards for the best industrial park in Central and Eastern Europe in 2017 and the Tchibo distribution centre achieved an “Excellent” rating under the international BREEAM New Construction sustainability certification.
