Warsaw Stock Exchange: The share of individual investors on the main market fell to 16% in 2023

The share of individual investors in trading on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) amounted to 16% in 2023 (by 1 percentage point less y/y), the stock exchange said. Foreign investors generated 65% of turnover on the main market of the WSE (+1 percentage y/y), achieving a hysterical record result.

In 2023, foreign investors generated the largest share in trading on the main WSE stock market, as in previous years. It amounted to 65%, 1 percentage point more than in 2022, which is the highest result in history. In the second half of 2023, foreign investors accounted for 66% of turnover, 1 percentage point more than in the first half of 2023. The share of national institutional investors in 2023 was 19%, the same as the year before. In the second half of 2023, institutional investors accounted for 19% of turnover, 1 percentage point more than in the first half of 2023. In 2023, individual investors generated 16% of turnover on the main WSE market, 1 percentage point less y/y. In the second half of 2023, individual investors were responsible for 15% of turnover, 2 percentage points less than in the first half of 2023.

In 2023, institutional investors generated 9% of turnover, i.e. 2 percentage points less than in 2022, and foreign investors - 7% (by 2 percentage points more y/y). On the other hand, the share of institutional and foreign investors in the second half of 2023 amounted to 9% (the same as in the first half. 2023) and 8% (+2 percentage points compared to I PLN. 2023), it was reported.

In 2023, foreign investors played a leading role in the derivatives market, whose share in the futures market reached a record, 38% for the second year in a row. Domestic individual investors generated 32% in the volume of trading in futures contracts, 2 percentage points less than in 2022. In 2023, national institutions accounted for 30% of turnover in this market, an increase of 3 percentage y/y. The share of individual investors in options turnover increased by 1 percentage y/y to 46%, while foreign and institutional investors accounted for: 32% (-2 percentage points y/y) and 22% (+1 percentage y/y) turnover on this market. The share of foreign and individual investors on the structural products market was 50%, it was further reported.

In the Catalyst bond market, the main role in turnover played by national institutions, which generated a share of 63% in 2023, an increase of 4 percentage points compared to 2022. Individual investors accounted for 36% of turnover (-4 percentage points y/y), while foreign investors were responsible for 1% (the same as a year earlier).
