The Hungarian state has purchased 90% of the company that operates Heviz-Balaton International Airport, located in Sarmellek onthe Western shore of lake Balaton. It has been decided that the ownership will be exercised by the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTU). The MTU says that this purchase is in accordance to the development directions that’s goal is to increase the attractiveness of the most visited area in Hungary besides Budapest. The airport so far has served as a seasonal airport mainly operating flights from Germany, but according to plans this may change with regular annual service to other European cities.
