Slovak construction sector sees growth in January 2025, driven by foreign demand

The Slovak construction sector recorded its strongest year-on-year performance since April 2024, with total construction production reaching EUR 436.1 million in January. This represented a 7.2% increase compared to the same period last year, marking the third consecutive month of higher year-on-year performance. The growth was primarily driven by Slovak builders operating abroad, while domestic construction activity saw only moderate improvements.

Within domestic construction, both new construction and repairs and maintenance recorded moderate growth of 1.6%. However, the “other construction works” category experienced a significant decline of nearly one-third, though it remains a minor segment of the industry. Domestic construction continued to account for the majority of sector output, representing 86% of total production. A breakdown of construction types showed that building construction increased by 3% year-on-year. In contrast, work on engineering structures, including highway construction, continued its downward trend for the ninth consecutive month, declining by 7.4% in January.

The most significant boost to the sector came from Slovak construction enterprises working abroad, where output surged by more than 80% compared to the previous year. This increase also led to a growing share of total sector production, rising to 14%. The combination of steady domestic activity and strong foreign demand provided a positive start for the construction sector in 2025, signaling continued resilience despite ongoing challenges in infrastructure-related projects.
